Louisbourg, located on Cape Breton Island in what is now Nova Scotia. Jeffery Amherst took the fortress with a substantial 11,600-man army in 1758. After an extensive land siege and naval bombardment the fortress fell, with the British taking 5,600 prisoners and 239 guns. Its fall opened the St. Lawrence River to British ships and led to the capture of Quebec the following year.
