Marshal Patrice de MacMahon led the Army of Chalons during the Battle of Sedan. He was on his way to relievE Bazaine at Metz but was trapped by superior Prussian forces. Napoleon III and much of the Army of Chalons was captured after the battle. The French Second Empire collapsed, and the Third Republic was established.
