Algeria. Established March 9, 1831, by Marshal Nicolas Jean-de-Dieu Soult, the Legion was sent to Algeria to fight Abd al-Qadir. It earned its name by repulsing several attacks in 1832. Since then, the French Foreign Legion has served all around the world. It accepts non-French nationalists willing to fight for French interests.
