Battle of Carrhae, 53 BC, in which the Parthians captured seven eagle standards. The seven legions had been destroyed mostly by exhaustion and missile fire from the enemy cavalry. Of the 40,000 men Marcus Licinius Crassus took out to meet the Parthians, only 5,000 returned home. Crassus and his son weren’t among them.
