Prussian. After the Prussian army adopted the breech-loading needle gun, or Zundnadelgewehr, its rate of small-arms fire increased dramatically. The effects of its devastation were seen during the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, when the Austrian troops were equipped with muzzleloaders. Infantry equipped with the needle gun could fire 6 – 7 rounds per minute, compared to 2 – 3 per minute for the muzzleloader.
