Brigadier General Braxton Bragg. Following Albert Sidney Johnston’s death at the Battle of Shiloh, P.G.T. Beauregard took over the Army of Mississippi but was soon replaced by Bragg. Bragg invaded Kentucky in the autumn of 1862 but did not handle his army well. Although Perryville was a tactical victory for the Confederates, he withdrew back into Tennessee.
