Cartridges. Made for the new Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle, the cartridges were paper and came pre-greased to make loading easier. They were rumored to be greased in cow or pig fat, considered offensive by Hindus and Muslims, as the former regard the cow sacred and the latter consider the pig "unclean." After much bloodshed, the Indian Mutiny was quelled, and the British Crown assumed control from the East India Company.
