Crete. Designated Operation MERCURY, it began on May 20, 1941. The Germans ultimately prevailed, capturing 12,000 Allied troops, but they lost nearly a third of the Ju 52 aircraft and a quarter of the airborne infantry used in the operation. Hitler declared the day of the airborne infantry was over.
