Dien Bien Phu was Henri Navarre’s brainchild. He was out-generaled during the battle, however, by Vo Nguyen Giap. The air supply of the base had been unsustainable after the Vietnamese dragged artillery onto the surrounding hilltops and continually bombarded the fortress for several months while the Viet Minh infantry tightened their grip.
