Napoleon Bonaparte created this self-sufficient combined-arms grouping of troops.
The division
The corps
The brigade
The platoon
The corps. Created by Napoleon as a self-sustaining fighting unit, it consisted of several divisions, its own supply train, and an artillery train. The first Corps d’Armee was created in 1805, and it allowed Napoleon greater maneuver flexibility. He could have several corps operating independently and then immediately order them to converge on one spot to concentrate against an enemy force.
