Khalkhin Gol, fought May – September 1939 during the Soviet-Japanese Border Wars. Each side admits total casualties of around 20,000, but the numbers may well be higher. The Soviet victory led Japan to sign the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact in early 1941. Japan considered initiating new hostilities when Nazi Germany invaded the USSR later that year, but the casualties sustained during Khalkhin Gol were likely a major factor in rejecting the idea.
