Schlieffen wanted to hold Russia in the east while swinging the German right through Holland and Belgium to attack and swiftly defeat France in the west. Moltke the Younger executed the plan but modified it, reinforcing the east and thereby weakening the critical western offensive ? and perhaps losing the war because of it.
