The Admiral Graf Spee, a Deutschland-class heavy cruiser. Badly damaged in a fight with three Royal Navy cruisers near the River Plate (Rio de la Plata) off Argentina and Uruguay, the ship put into neutral Montevideo for repairs. Believing a strong Royal Navy force was nearby, Capt. Hans Langsdorff ordered the ship scuttled. He committed suicide, but most of the crew was able to escape through Argentina.
