Urban II helped ignite the First Crusade with his speech at the Council of Clermont in 1095. He was the first to speak at the council, and his words would create much hysteria and a religious movement that would change the world. The First Crusade was successful perhaps because of the religious zeal seen by the pilgrims who joined it.
