Admiral Francois Joseph Paul de Grasse landed 3,000 French reinforcements on the Yorktown peninsula just prior to fighting the Battle of the Chesapeake. Though tactically inconclusive, the sea battle was a strategic victory for the French-American alliance. British General Cornwallis had to surrender Yorktown, all but ending the American Revolutionary War.
