Naval Academy. The monument honors the six Americans killed in a war with the Barbary Coast Pirates in 1804, an action also commemorated in the Marines’ Hymn, "the shores of Tripoli." The marble monument, carved in Italy in 1806, was brought to the Washington Naval Yard, then moved to the west terrace of the Capitol. In November 1860, it was permanently moved to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.
