Mexico. Johnson and Mexico’s president Gustavo Diaz Ordaz met on the international bridge between El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, to officially return the long-disputed El Chamizal area to the Mexican side of the border. Changes in the course of the Rio Grande, particularly a major flood in 1864, transferred 600 acres of land from the south side of the river to the north side. The two nations disputed the ownership for nearly a century.
