Mithradates VI ruled a large kingdom around the Black Sea from 113 BC to 64 BC. He fought three major conflicts against Rome, called the Mithridatic Wars, and soundly defeated the Romans in the first two. Mithradates lost the third war to Pompey and took his own life when his son launched a coup against him.
