Seattle. The Lake Washington Floating Bridge, resting on large pontoons, was constructed to expedite travel for workers going to the revitalized Lake Washington Shipyards. The timing was perfect: In just a year and a half, America would be thrust into the Second World War. At its wartime peak, the shipyard employed 8,000 workers, many of whom would have had to travel by ferry or drive around the lake had the bridge not been built.
