The War of Spanish Succession, which broke out after the last Habsburg king of Spain, Charles II, died in 1700. The Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 recognized Felipe V as king, but in return Spain ceded its possessions in the Netherlands and Italy to Austria and Savoy and relinquished all claims to the French throne. Likewise, French princes relinquished all claims they might have to the Spanish throne.
