Admiral Horatio Nelson. At the beginning of the Battle of Trafalgar, Oct. 21, 1805, when Nelson’s 32 British ships faced a combined French and Spanish fleet that totaled 38 ships, the admiral used signal flags to send his message. Different versions were recorded in ships’ logs, some saying "to do his duty." Originally, he intended to signal "England confides that every man will do his duty," or possibly "Nelson confides."
