The Battle of Assandun, or Ashingdon. Canute (Knut) Sveinsson routed Edmund’s forces on October 18, 1016. Under the terms of the subsequent treaty, Edmund governed Wessex and Canute controlled Mercia and Northumbria. There was another condition to the treaty: whichever ruler died first, the other would rule the whole kingdom of England. Edmund died the following month.
