Constantinople. The war is clouded in myths and legends. It was initiated by Yaroslov I of Kiev. His oldest son, Vladimir of Novgorod, led the Rus’ naval force, which was destroyed off the coast of Anatolia. Some sources claim the Byzantines used Greek fire to wreak havoc on the invading force; others say the Rus’ fleet was devastated by a storm. There is some evidence that hostilities were renewed in land campaigns the following year.
