"My Western Home." Doctor Brewster Higley built a one-room cabin near Beaver Creek after moving to Kansas from Ohio to escape an unhappy marriage. He wrote the poem for his own enjoyment, but a friend convinced him to have it published. It first appeared in the December 1873 edition of the Smith County Pioneer. Another friend, Daniel Kelley, put the words to music. It became the Kansas state song in 1947.
