John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church in England and America, preached outside when he was not allowed inside churches due to his doctrine, which was in opposition to prevalent religious doctrine. His father’s tombstone in Epworth, England, made an effective pulpit. When John Wesley died in 1791, the Methodist Church had 135,000 members and 541 lay preachers.
