Sister Nivedita. Born in Ireland in 1867 of Scot-Irish descent, she began studying Buddhism and became a disciple of Swami Vivekananda, who named her Sister Nivedita (“the Dedicated One” or “Dedicated to God”). After immigrating to India, she worked to improve the lives of women of all castes. She promoted Indian nationalism through her writing and orations, and designed the Indian national flag.
