Martha Washington. At age 10, Judge became a household slave to the Washingtons, then Martha Washington’s personal slave. Mrs. Washington brought Judge to New York City when her husband became president and then to Philadelphia when the nation’s capital moved there. Mrs. Washington told Judge she was going to be a wedding gift to Mrs. Washington’s granddaughter. With the aid of freed black friends in Philadelphia, Judge escaped to New Hampshire. George Washington, who had signed America’s original Fugitive Slave Act into law, tried twice to have her recaptured but was unsuccessful.
