Three inches. Foot binding, practiced in China for hundreds of years, was officially banned in 1912 but continued to be practiced for several more years. To achieve three inches, a girl’s toes were broken and bound under the soles of her foot with a ten-foot long bandage. Tiny feet were a status symbol and only women with tiny feet could find husbands.
