In naming the bell and adopting it as a symbol, the abolitionists referred to the Bible verse engraved on the bell, "Proclaim LIBERTY throughout the Land unto all the inhabitants thereof" – Leviticus 25:10. After the Civil War, the Bell was exhibited throughout the country in an effort to help heal the nation.
