Canada, in the battle of St. Julien – Kitchener’s Wood, (Apr. 24 – May 5, 1915), during the Second Battle of Ypres. On the night of Apr. 22 – 23, 10th Battalion of the 2nd Canadian Brigade and 16th Battalion of the 3rd Brigade counterattacked into a gap in the Allies’ line that developed after a German gas attack. An impromptu bayonet charge drove off the German defenders but at high cost to the Canadians.
