1930s. The company wanted to dramatize their message that their lubricants were made from the oldest (270 million years) known crude oil and that the oldest crudes produced the best oil. They ran a series of ads in 104 newspapers and five national magazines featuring a variety of dinosaurs, including T. rex. The Apatosaurus – most people called it a Brontosaurus – captured the public’s imagination and has been touting Sinclair ever since.
