250,000. Initially, only a small, mobile force was committed, but in July 1942 Italy’s dictator Benito Mussolini increased that to a quarter-million foot soldiers. Known as both ARMIR (Royal Italian Army in Russia) and 8th Army, it served in German Army Group B until being virtually destroyed at Stalingrad. At that time, Mussolini disbanded the force and brought home the survivors.
