Wales. Farmers considered turnpike tolls exorbitant in poverty-stricken Wales. Men dressed as women to disguise themselves as they tore down toll gates and attacked toll collectors. They called themselves Rebecca’s Daughters, or simply Rebeccas, after Genesis 24:60 in the Bible: "And they blessed Rebecka and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy see possess the gate of those which hate them."
