Fernandez Gonzalo de Cordoba, "the Great Captain." After leading an army against the French in Italy, 1495 – 98, he returned to Spain and developed coordination between infantry, artillery and cavalry. He armed infantrymen with arquebus guns and divided the army into independent maneuver elements.
