Alaska. Benson won a contest the Territory of Alaska conducted for students in grades in 7 – 12. The Territorial Legislature adopted his design in May 1927. Its blue field represents the sky and an Alaskan flower, the forget-me-not. Seven gold stars form the Big Dipper; a single gold star at upper right represented future statehood.
