Thanksgiving Day 1895. The Chicago Times-Herald sponsored a 54-mile race from Chicago to Evanston, Ill., and back. Frank Duryea, who created America’s first gasoline-powered horseless carriage in 1893 with his brother Charles, won in 10 hours, 23 minutes, with an average speed of 7.3 miles. Only one other car among his five competitors finished the race.
