James K. Polk. The CSA’s first stamp issue depicted Jefferson Davis, followed by Thomas Jefferson (1861 – 1862) and then Washington and Jackson in 1863. Polk, a pro-slavery politician from Tennessee, first appeared on a stamp in the U.S. Post Office’s 1938 Presidential Series.
