Spencer Perceval. On May 11, 1812, Perceval was shot in the lobby of the House of Commons by merchant John Bellingham who, after being unjustly imprisoned in Russia, felt the British Government owed him compensation. When Bellingham’s requests fell on deaf ears, he took revenge against the prime minister. Perceval died from his wounds early on the morning of May 12 at 10 Downing Street.
