After severely damaging two Union ships on its way out of the Yazoo River, Arkansas ran the gauntlet of Federal ships at Vicksburg, then within days was dispatched to support an attack on Baton Rouge. An engagement with USS Essex on Aug. 6, 1862, was more than the ship’s overburdened engines could stand, and the crew scuttled Arkansas after its machinery broke down.
