James II. The duchy of Berwick was created for James FitzJames, an illegitimate son of James II, with Arabella Churchill, sister of the Duke of Marlborough. He fled England with his father after the Glorious Revolution in 1688 and took refuge within France. He participated in James’ invasion of Ireland and fought at the Battle of the Boyne.
