23. Custer was promoted from captain to brigadier general three days before the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. Two other captains, Wesley Merritt and Elon J. Farnsworth, were promoted at the same time. Custer would later be killed at the infamous Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876 alongside 285 other members of the 7th Cavalry.
