Dabny H. Maury. Although he exhibited skill as an officer and administrator, ultimately rising to command the District of the Gulf late in the war, Maury was not a tall man. The sight of the diminutive officer in high cavalry boots led to the nickname. Postwar, he founded and chaired the Southern Historical Society.
