Braxton Bragg thwarted the Federals’ threat to Chattanooga in July, 1862 when he moved his army 770 rail miles from Tupelo to Chattanooga. The army traveled over several railroads that used different gauges for their rail size, which often required the men to leave one train and board another where two incompatible rail lines met.
