Kentucky. On Dec. 17, 1861, some 500 Indiana volunteer infantry repulsed repeated attacks by around 1,300 riders of the 8th Texas Cavalry at a skirmish known as Rowlett‘s Station or Woodsonville. The cavalry‘s commander, Col. B. F. Terry, was killed, but his unit maintained the name Terry‘s Texas Rangers.
