Glenn Miller. After "Chattanooga Choo Choo" sold over a million records in three months, RCA Victor sprayed one of the master copies with gold paint and surprised Miller with it during a live radio broadcast on Feb. 10, 1942. This publicity stunt was the basis for the award established a decade later by the Recording Industry Association of America for record sales in excess of 500,000 copies.
