Hostage. In 418 AD, following peace negotiations between Rome and the Huns, 12-year-old Attila was sent to Rome as a hostage while the Roman general Flavious Aetius was sent to the Huns for the same purpose. Attila studied Roman policies, both internal and foreign before returning to his people.
