Morgan, a Mexican War veteran, remained close to his home in Lexington until after the death of his wife from a long illness, when he took his "Lexington Rifles," which would become the core of the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry, into Tennessee and began his rise to brigadier general, commanding a cavalry division.
