1946. The US Army Signal Corps, using a highly modified WWII transmitter, sent the first successful transmission from near Wall Township, New Jersey, at 11:58 a.m. local time, Jan. 10, 1946. Named Project Diana, after the Roman moon goddess, It marked the birth of radar astronomy and, arguably, that of the US space program.
