Star of the West. The steamer dispatched by President James Buchanan to resupply Federal troops inside the fort turned back after being fired on by guns in Charleston, South Carolina, on Jan. 9, 1861, two months before Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as president. Originally the sloop of war Brooklyn was to carry the reinforcements, but Buchanan felt that would be too provocative.
