Osei Bonsu, who ascended to the Golden Stool, the symbol of the Ashanti rulers, around 1801. Ashantiland, which comprised much of modern Ghana, received European firearms in exchange for slaves. After Britain outlawed the slave trade in 1807, disputes over trade and the Fante region of the country led to warfare in the 1820s that ended with a peace in 1831.
